Canada has had ten over-the-board grandmasters: Peter Biyiasas who was awarded the title in 1978, Mark Bluvshtein 2004, Pascal Charbonneau 2006, Igor Ivanov 2005 (deceased), Joel Lautier (Born in France to a Canadian father) 1990, Alexandre Lesiege 1997, Kevin Spraggett 1985 (lives in Portugal), Duncan Suttles 1973, Dmitry Tyomkin 2000 (immigrated from Israel) and Daniel Yanofsky (deceased) 1964. Georgian/Israeli GM Yona Kosashvili is currently residing in Toronto with his wife IM Sofia Polgar.
In correspondence play, Canada has seen six grandmasters: Francis Jonathan Berry 1985, Jean Hébert 1984, Robert Kiviaho 1984, Wolfram Schön 2006, Duncan Suttles 1982 and Alexander Ugge 2005.
