Stefan Bryła (b.
August 17 ,1886 inKraków -December 3 ,1943 inWarsaw ,Poland ) was a Polish constructionengineer andwelding pioneer. Lwów University of Technology from 1927, andWarsaw University of Technology from 1934.Bryła was the author of basic methods of welding steel structures.
In 1927 he designed the first welded
road bridge in the world. The bridge was later built across the river Słudwia Maurzyce nearŁowicz, Poland in 1929. It was still in use in 1977 but plans were to replace it with a wider structure. The government proposed to install the bridge at site slightly upstream as a historical monument. In 1995, theAmerican Welding Society presented an Historic Welded Structure Award for the bridge to Poland. World War II he taught at "Secret Universities ". Secret teaching was a cause of arrest Stefan Bryła.He was arrested 16 November 1943 with all family and murdered in (Action AB) by the Germans in
