John Bampfylde

John Bampfylde

John Bampfylde (8 April 1691 – 17 September 1750) was an English politician. He was a member of an old Devonshire family, the younger brother of Sir Coplestone Bampfylde, 3rd Baronet. He is not to be confused with his great-nephew, John Codrington Bampfylde.

By his first marriage to Elizabeth Basset, he had no children. By his second marriage to Margaret Warre (d. 1758), daughter and heir of Sir Francis Warre, 1st Baronet, he had a son and two daughters: [cite web | title=Bampfylde genealogy | url=http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/british/bb4ae/bampfylde1.htm | accessdate=2006-10-11]

He inherited Hestercombe House from his father-in-law in 1718 and began to lay out gardens there. The present gardens are largely the work of his son.
