"Plasmodium octamerium" is a parasite of the genus "Plasmodium".

Like all "Plasmodium" species "P. octamerium" has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are birds.

Description

The parasite was first described by Manwell 1968. Manwell R. D. (1968) "Plasmodium octamerium" n. sp., an avian malaria parasite from the pintail whydah bird "Vidua macroura". J. Protozool. 15(4):680-685]

Geographical occurrence

This species was described in Africa and has also been reported in Hong Kong.

Clinical features and host pathology

Known hosts for this parasite include the pintail whydah bird ("Vidua macroura") and the greater blue-eared glossy starling ("Lamprotornis chalybaeus") Paperna I., Martelli P.
