- USS Duffy (DE-27)
The USS "Duffy" (DE-27) was an "Evarts"-class destroyer escort that served in the Pacific during
World War II . It was named afterCharles John Duffy ."Duffy" was launched from the
Mare Island Navy Yard onApril 16 ,1943 , and was originally intended for transfer to Britain. Instead, she was commissioned by the U.S. Navy onAugust 5 ,1943 , captained by Commander G. A. Parkinson, USNR.The "Duffy" was mainly involved in escorting supply ships and as part of larger carrier groups, taking credit for downing an enemy plane in December 1944 at
Leyte . OnDecember 29 ,1944 , the "Duffy" fired a shore bombardment onMaloelap while covering air strikes. The "Duffy" continued to bombard and wage psychological warfare on various bypassed islands, and onJune 14 ,1945 , she took prisoner seven men of the cutoff garrison onMille Atoll .At the end of the war, the "Duffy" sailed back to
San Francisco , where she arrived onJuly 26 ,1945 . She was decommissioned there onNovember 9 ,1945 and soldJune 16 ,1947 .By the end of the war, the "Duffy" had received two battle stars.
