- Euforquestra
Bio
Euforquestra is an eclectic world-beat ensemble from Iowa City, IA with interests in different cultural and traditional music from all over the globe. The band has made a mission statement out of preserving different traditions, undescriminatingly trying anything at least once and fusing different styles that appeal to them. Their self-proclaimed "Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk" touches on such genres as Afrobeat, Funk, Bluegrass, Reggae, Soca, and several different types of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music. The appeal of their music reaches out to any and everyone with an "inclusive 'everyone get in here' sense of humor" (as put by Iowa City music critic, Jim Musser).
Euforquestra has two studio albums out which are currently getting radio play in states across the country. They have played at clubs in IA, IL, MO, MN, WI, NE, KS, CO, ID, and MT and have performed at festivals like Moe Summer Camp (IL), Spookstock (Schwagstock)(MO), Euphio Campout (MO), Wakarusa (KS), Mountain Fair (Carbondale, CO), and Sweet Pea Fest (MT). The band also hosts its own music festival every year called Camp Euforia.
Recently, Ochun, a song from Euforquestra's latest album, was selected to be on
Global Rhythm Magazine 's compilation disc.Something new is always being performed by Euforquestra as new projects drive the band into further musical studies. "Explorations in Afrobeat," the band's most recent release, is a fusion of west African and Cuban music rooted in the Yoruba tradition. Having had two members study in Cuba, the band dives deep into a rich tradition of Afro-Cuban rhythm and song called Lucumi or Santeria. The Lucumi are descendants of the Yoruba tribe of Southwestern Nigeria. With this album, Euforquestra combines folkloric Lucumi rhythms and chants with a more modern type of Nigerian music called Afrobeat. Here is where the band essentially connects two branches from the same musical tree.
