Stefan Gates

Stefan Gates (born 1967) is a British food writer and television presenter.

As a child, Gates, along with his sister, were photographed as child models. They posed together for knitwear patterns and appeared separately in commercials and TV dramas, including "Poldark". They were the child models who were photographed for the cover of English rock band Led Zeppelin's album "Houses of the Holy" (1973). After leaving University, Stefan spent the first 16 years of his working life in film and TV - the jobs were varied and included: Assistant Director, scriptwriter, director and producer, finally ending up in BBC Comedy as a development producer. Due to his fascination with unusual foods he started writing about them and this led to him becoming a presenter and co-writer on the BBC Two series "Full on Food" in the winter of 2004.

He currently presents the food programme "Cooking in the Danger Zone", which, as of 30th March 2008, has just finished showing the third series in the UK on BBC Two. In each episode of the series Stefan visits crisis zones around the world where the living isn't easy and the food is unusual. The series are first shown on BBC Four and then repeated on BBC Two.

He has written one book, "Gastronaut", published in hardback in 2005 and paperback in 2006. In March 2008 a book has also been published as a companion to the TV series "Cooking in the Danger Zone" titled "Stefan Gates in the Danger Zone". Gates is due to start work on a new series in 2008 based on his Gastronaut concept but aimed at children, entitled Gastronuts and produced by Objective Productions.

Personal life

He is married to one of the UK's top food photographers Georgia Glynn Smith and they have two children.
