Mask of Ferdinand

Mask of Ferdinand

The Mask of Ferdinand refers to movements for independence in Latin America that began around 1810. A few of the elites of the Spanish colonies took advantage of the confusion surrounding the deposition of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII, to set up an autonomous government - the Mask - that claimed to rule in his name. Though the Mask of Ferdinand claimed to be conservative, it was an early move toward independence in Latin America.
