Originally a game show host, he has become known primarily as anannouncer for several game show series, dating back to the 1950s. He is currently the announcer of the television quiz show "Jeopardy! A former nightclub singer and entertainer, Gilbert also emceed a number of game shows in the 1950s and 1960s, among them being "
Music Bingo ", "Fast Draw", and "Beat The Odds ". In the 1960s, he replacedDon Pardo as the voice of "The Price is Right " when it moved from NBC to ABC. He also hosted his own local talk/variety show on WLWD-TV (nowWDTN ) in Dayton, Ohio. His first role as announcer was on a show entitled "Movie Game ", which lasted until 1972.Other credits that Gilbert has held over the years included "
Sports Challenge ", "Camouflage", "Chain Reaction", "Go", "Blackout", "The $25,000 Pyramid", and "Supermarket Sweep ". He also substituted forGene Wood on severalGoodson-Todman game shows, including "Family Feud " and "Card Sharks "; in addition, Gilbert succeeded Wood as the announcer for "Love Connection ", for the 1988-1989 season.
