He is the son of Sukarlan and Poppy Kumudastuti. He started his music lessons at the age of 5 from his older sister, then he studied in The Jakarta Music School. Back home, he managed to secure a scholarship from the Dutch government to study in The Hague Conservatory. However, in 1993, the cultural cooperation between Indonesia and the Dutch Government stopped, hence his scholarship was stopped as well. He began to join international competitions in order to pay for his own studies in the conservatory, and he won many of the competitions. According to Sukarlan, the money he got from winning the competition is enough to cover his living expenses for eight months. In 1998, after graduating from the conservatory, he moved to Cantabria, Spain, and married Raquel Gomez. They had one daughter, Alicia Pirena Sukarlan. He is a founding member of Musica Presente and of Jakarta Conservatory of Music. [ [http://www.pdat.co.id/hg/apasiapa/html/A/ads,20030701-49,A.html Ananda Sukarlan biography (In Indonesian)] ] .
