- Emil Redlich
Emil Redlich (
January 18 ,1866 -June 9 ,1930 ) was an Austrianneurologist who was born inBrünn . In 1889 he received his doctorate from theUniversity of Vienna and later did research work onanatomy of the brain atHeinrich Obersteiner ’s (1847-1922) institute. In 1895 he was a medical assistant atJulius Wagner-Jauregg 's (1857-1940) neurological institute, and in 1898 became head of a private mental institution at Inzerdorf, outside ofVienna . In 1914 he was appointed director of the Nervenheilanstalt Maria-Theresia-Schlössel in Vienna.Redlich is remembered for his description of a type of disseminated
encephalomyelitis ("encephalomyelitis epidemica disseminata") with lesions distributed throughout thespinal cord and brain. This disorder was to become known as Redlich's syndrome, and sometimes Flatau-Redlich disease, named along withEdward Flatau (1868-1932), who discovered the same symptoms independently of Redlich. Also the anatomical location where thecentral nervous system meets theperipheral nervous system is referred to asRedlich-Obersteiner's Zone ; named along with Heinrich Obersteiner.Bibliography
