Prairie Central High School
- Prairie Central High School
Prairie Central High School is the high school for the Prairie Central Consolidated School District in central Illinois. It is located in Fairbury, Illinois.
The current principal is Dan Schmitt.
History
Prior to the creation of the consolidated district in 1984, the building in which the current high school is housed was known as Fairbury-Cropsey Junior-Senior High School, with the "Fighting Tartars" as their mascot. The consolidation in 1984 brought together the students of Forrest-Strawn-Wing High School and Chatsworth High School as the new Prairie Central. Forrest-Strawn-Wing high school built a new high school in the 1980s which became the Junior High for the newly created Prairie Central school district. The district further expanded in 2004 with the addition of the students from the former Chenoa High School.
Upon the change of the school's name, the mascot was also changed, from the Fighting Tartars (for Fairbury-Cropsey), the Fighting Eskimos (for Forrest-Strawn-Wing) and Bluebirds (for Chatsworth) to the Hawks. The colors were also changed, from green and yellow gold (for Fairbury), red and black (for Forrest-Strawn-Wing), and blue and orange(for Chatsworth) to white, Columbia blue, and navy.
Competition
*The original Fairbury-Cropsey High School was best known for its superb marching band; the Fighting Tartars regularly won state titles against much larger competition. Forrest Strawn Wing (FSW) High School also fielded a dominating marching band program in the late 70's and early 80s.
*In 2003 the Prairie Central High School Hawks football team placed 2nd in the IHSA 4A football championship held at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
*In 2008 the hawks dominated the season with a 6-3 season going into the playoffs
