Spod is an Australian indie/electro band from Sydney's Inner West. The term Spod is highly versatile; it is simultaneously the pseudonym of the band's leader and the name of the band, whether he is performing solo or with other members. The term also functions as an acronym for "Scorpion Powers Of Darkness".

Biography

Claiming to be over 1,000,000,000 years old, Spod describes himself as a "Conductor of Radness, Destroyer of Dreamz, Inducer of Fantasy" [http://spod.com.au/media.htm] . Despite his many years, Spod only began laying down trax as recently as the Summer of 1995. Recording during this early period was made through 4-track and Spod's output was limited to various homemade cassettes.

In 2003 Spod finally released his debut album, "Taste the Radness", via Australia's premier independent label, Shock Records. The album drew heavily upon electroclash and hip hop, and took its thematical inspiration from the cultural climate of Spod's hometown Ashfield - ie: sex, parties, the future, hot love, emotional wastelands, 4-Eva and ultimate destruction. "Taste the Radness" saw input from Spod's backup dancers, vocalists and choreographers, Krylon and A-Blade (collectively, the SCORPIONZ), specifically on the track "2131 Ride Wit Me". This song was included on a 2004 edition of Australian Rolling Stone magazine's "New Sounds" cover CD.

Following the release of "Taste the Radness", Spod toured extensively, including a position on the Sydney leg of Big Day Out 2004. As the year progressed, Spodbegan to frequently augment his live line-up (which traditionally featured the SCORPIONZ) with members of metal band Black Level Embassy. Ultimately, this live set-up culminated in the release of a new EP, "Eternal Championz", in September 2004. The EP featured metal reworkings of traditional Spod trax "Country of Sweden", "Secks Party 4 Eva" and "Makin' Party". "Nerdz" was played extensively on local radio stations, such as FBi Radio.

The EP was recorded in the home of Regurgitator's Quan Yeomans. Spod and Regurgitator have collaborated on a number of occasions, including, but not limited to, a spate of joint gigs in 2004 (advertised as "ReSPODutator") and a collaboration recorded in Regurgitator's 2004 "Band in the Bubble" project. As of 2007, Spod and Quan Yeomans have formed a side project called BLOX.

The Future

2007 saw Spod selected to play the annual South by Southwest festival, in March in Austin, Texas [http://2007.sxsw.com/music/festival/] . The appearance at this respected indie symposium marks Spod's first major foray into international territory. While in the US, Spod is also scheduled to support Electric Six in New York City's Bowery Ballroom. A new, titled "Superfrenz", album is scheduled for release in 2007. According to Spod, this album's theme is "death".
