bivalve mollusc of the familyPsammobiidae , endemic toNew Zealand . It is found around the North, South, Stewart and Chatham islands, in shallow water off coastal beaches.The shell is large, rather thin, elongate-ovate, smooth and polished, with a weak angulation running from the beak to the lower edge of the subtruncate posterior end. The pallial sinus is very deep, extending to almost two thirds the width of the shell.
Coloration is pinkish, with concentric bands of reddish-purple. The interior is diffused with reddish-purple.
Height is up to 41 mm, length 80 mm, and thickness 19 mm.
