History
Officially redesignated as the 940th Air Refueling Wing in 1993, it traces its history back to 1963 when it was originally activated as the 940th Troop Carrier Group. [ [http://www.940arw.afrc.af.mil/library/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=3647 Ibid.] ] The 940 TCG was activated at McClellan AFB, Calif., flying the C-119 Flying Boxcar. In March 1974 the group converted to C-130A Hercules and only three years later moved to Mather AFB, Calif, and converted to the KC-135A Stratotanker. It was at this time the group became the 940th Air Refueling Group. In September of 1986 the 940 ARG traded its tired KC-135A Stratotankers for the upgraded KC-135E configuration. When Mather AFB closed the 940 ARG temporarily moved to McClellan AFB, Calif. in Jul 1993 until in May 1998 it moved to current home at Beale AFB, Calif. In the summer of 2005 the 940 ARW will upgrade its KC-135s on last time to the KC-135T model. Following the approval of the 2005
Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendations by President Bush the 940th ARW will change missions from flying the KC-135 to the RQ-4 Global Hawk, unmanned high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and other command and control missions. In 2008 the 940th Air Refueling Wing will be redesignated as the 940th Command and Control Wing (CCW) and operating the U-2's
