The AFYM, (the Abertawe
Festival for YoungMusicians ) is an annual musical festival inSwansea for young musicians (5-18year s). It consists of 6 days (at the end of January or start of February) of classes andcompetition s of varying age groups, with a finishing gala concert in theTaliesin theatre in March.History
The
Festival is the brainchild of two musicians andteacher s who, frustrated by the lack offestival s in theSwansea locality, decided to start their own. And amonth or two later the first AFYM was held. In that firstyear ,1993 , thefestival attracted 70 competitors, using onehall - theTaliesin Arts Centre atSwansea University - and employing oneadjudicator . Since 1993, thefestival has gone from strength to strength. From only oneadjudicator and seventy competitors in 1993, the festival attracted 500 competitors, 6adjudicator s and over 67 classes covering threehall s (GuildHall Swansea since 2000).External links
