In 1982, Hinckley, Illinois served as stand-in for fictional "North Crawford" in Jonathan Demme's television film adaptation of "Who Am I This Time?" by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.. [ End credits, home video release, MontereyMedia.com ] Christopher Walken portrays a painfully shy hardware store clerk. Susan Sarandon's character has recently moved into the community. They meet one another through a local theater production of "A Streetcar Named Desire", in which they portray the tempestuous Stanley and Stella Kowalski. She is attracted to his stage presence but finds him difficult to catch off-stage. As the rehearsals progress, she realizes he comes to life only when acting and so she gets him to admit his feelings through her closing-night gift: a copy of "Romeo and Juliet." The story ends with him proposing via Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest".
