Smith (gesture)

Smith (gesture)

A Smith is, in some parts of the southwest United States, a specific type of nod, though it's likely that this form of nod exists elsewhere as well. This nod is always directed at a person, as an acknowledgement of existence. The "smith" is specific (when compared to other types of nods) in that it is most often used to diffuse tense situations. It is always a downward motion of the head, while the eyes stay fixed on the recipient of the nod.

A good example of this gesture in use was during the 2000 U.S. presidential debate. Al Gore moved from his side of the stage to George W. Bush's side in an apparent attempt to intimidate him. Bush merely looked at Gore and "smithed" him. Gore then moved back over to his side of the stage.
