Berlin-Gesundbrunnen railway station
- Berlin-Gesundbrunnen railway station
Berlin-Gesundbrunnen is a railway station in Berlin, Germany. It is situated in the eponymous district in the former Wedding borough as an interconnection point between the northern Ringbahn and "Nord-Süd-Tunnel" lines of the Berlin S-Bahn, as well as a regional and long distance station of the Deutsche Bahn network. The station opened at the "Ringbahn" railway line on July 17, 1871. The junction with the "Nordbahn" line to Neubrandenburg was finished on July 10, 1877. From May 1, 1897 on Gesundbrunnen also had access to the Berlin-Szczecin railway line, whose original tracks were shifted southwards to meet the "Ringbahn" here. On August 8, 1924 Gesunbrunnen was one of the first stations to be part of the Berlin S-Bahn system.
After World War II and the division of Berlin long-distance train service diminuished and finally discontinued on May 18, 1952. The S-Bahn system was also affected by the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, when the network was partitioned in a eastern and western half. After German reunification, Gesundbrunnen was rebuilt as Berlin's northern long-distance train station with tracks and platforms extensively modernised. Nevertheless the old entrance building has been demolished without any substitute, giving the new station a peculiar appearance.
The station also has a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the rail text color|system=BVG|line=U8. It opened on April 18, 1930 according to plans by Alfred Grenander and served as an air-raid shelter during World War II.
