The district is located in Montreal. It is bounded to the north and east by the Canadian Pacific Railway, to the south by Rue Rachel and to the west by Avenue de l'Esplanade. The riding was created in 1965 from a part of Montréal-Mercier which was formed in 1923. The district was named in honour of former Quebec Premier Honoré Mercier.
