John D. Clifford, Jr. (
May 15 ,1887 —November 18 ,1956 ) was the eighth United States District Judge for the District of Maine, serving from 1933 to 1947. He was appointed District Judge by President Truman onJanuary 10 ,1947 to a seat vacated byJohn A. Peters . He held that office until his death in 1956.Judge Clifford practiced law in
Lewiston, Maine from 1914 until 1947. He had been active in the Democratic Party prior to his federal appointments and was a member of theMaine State Legislature from 1915 to 1916.He received degrees from
Bowdoin College in 1910 andGeorgetown Law School in 1913. OnJuly 14 ,1915 , he married Lucile E. Smith ofLansing, Michigan .Judge Clifford's nephew,
