kilometer motorway linkingBucharest , the capital ofRomania , withPiteşti , a city inArgeş County . The A1 was the first freeway to be built in Romania, constructed in the 1960s during theGheorghe Gheorghiu Dej communist regime and upgraded in2000 . The motorway is to be expanded to 620 km by 2014, connecting the capital city ofBucharest to theBanat region in western Romania and furthermore to central european motorway system.Extensions in progress

Piteşti East bypass
A 15-km long segment of highway, known as the "Piteşti East bypass(YouTube|rmQGoQvbYZM|video)". It was opened in November 2007 and diverts the traffic from the city center of
Piteşti . The project is not fully completed, as there are some construction to be done: a passageway in Bascov area and an upgrade to DN7 to two lane road for 1km. These works are to be completed by September 2008.ibiu bypass
The 23 km of motorway forming a ring around
Sibiu are to be completed in 2009.Arad - Timişoara section
For the 44 km long segment the deadline is November 2010.
Extension Piteşti-Arad-Budapest and Timişoara-Belgrade
There are plans to extend the freeway from Piteşti to the border with
Hungary , viaRâmnicu Vâlcea ,Sibiu , Deva,Timişoara , Arad andNădlac (at the Romanian/Hungarian border), along the 4th European corridor. It is planned that A1 will be connected with the Hungarian M43 motorway, which will constitute a branch of the M5 motorway in Hungary.Criticism
