Traunreut lies in the heart of theChiemgau region betweenMunich andSalzburg , approximately 10 km east of theChiemsee , 25 km north of theAlps , and 35 km west of Salzburg. Its population is approximately 21,000. In
1938 an ordnancefactory , known as "MUNA St. Georgen", was built on the outskirts of the village of St. Georgen, near the present location of Traunreut.AfterWorld War II , with the factory closed, refugees fromEastern Europe settled in the abandoned grounds, andtoxic material was removed from the area.The village of Traunreut was founded in
1950 . In1960 , Traunreut became a city, and in1978 itincorporate d with neighboring villages Traunwalchen, Stein-St. Georgen, and Pierling. Today, Traunreut is the largest city in the Traunstein district.External links
