Elisheva Carlebach Yoffen is an American scholar of early modern Jewish history.
Career
Carlebach is the
Salo Baron Professor of Jewish history at Columbia University. She was formerly History atQueens College and the Graduate Center,CUNY inNew York City . She has written widely on subjects relating to classicalJudaism and itsrabbi nic personalities, such asMoses Hagiz . She is also arebbetzin ("rabbi's wife"), married to Rabbi Mordechai Jofen (Yoffen) therosh yeshiva ("dean") of theNovardok yeshiva inBrooklyn , New York City. Dr. Carlebach obtained herPhD atColumbia University .Dr. Carlebach's family was one of the famous rabbinical families in
Germany beforethe Holocaust . Her grandfather was RabbiJoseph Carlebach , the lastchief rabbi ofHamburg , and her father is Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach who served as themashgiach ruchani at theYeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin and author of the commentary on theHumash "Maskil Lishlomo".Publications
