Gunner Jay Lindberg is currently on
Death Row inCalifornia in theUnited States . Lindberg was convicted in association with then 17-year-oldDomenic Michael Christopher of the brutal murder of 24-year-oldVietnamese American Thien Minh Ly on January 28, 1996, in Orange County, California. Lindberg wanted to celebrate that evening's Super Bowl victory by the Dallas Cowboys, which he called "America's team," by finding "a Jap," trapping him on high school tennis courts and then stabbing him 22 times. Prosecutors categorized this act as ahate crime .In July 2008, OC Weekly profiled Lindberg, Ly, the crime and the pending case before the California Supreme Court, which is debating whether or not the killing was a hate crime after Lindberg's attorney filed an appeal.
On August 29, 2008, the California Supreme Court issued a 69-page decision that affirmed Lindberg's trial, convictions and death sentence.
