Shipton-on-Cherwell is a village in
Oxfordshire ,England nearKidlington just north of the city ofOxford , on theRiver Cherwell . It is also close to theOxford Canal .The artist William Turner of
Oxford (1789–1862) lived there for a while from 1804 in the manor house with his uncle, also William Turner. He was married there in 1824 and is buried in the churchyard with his wife. In 1896, a memorialchancel screen was installed in the church, which he designed, with a brass plaque reading "Erected in memory of William Turner of Oxford, Water Colour Painter and architect of this church."The
Shipton-on-Cherwell train crash was a majorrail accident on theGreat Western Railway that occurred on24 December 1874 .The manor house became
The Manor Studio , owned byRichard Branson and used as arecording studio forVirgin Records . Albums recorded there included "Tubular Bells " byMike Oldfield (1972–73) and "Born Again" byBlack Sabbath (1983). In 1995, it was closed as a recording studio byEMI , by then the owner of Virgin Records. It is now the country home of theMarquess of Headfort .To the west is the small town of Woodstock. Immediately to the south is the village of Thrupp.
