Alfred Peter Swineford (
September 14 ,1836 ndashOctober 26 ,1909 ) was an American Democraticpolitician who was a member of theMichigan House of Representatives , 1871 to 1872. In 1878 he was a candidate in the Democratic primary forLieutenant Governor of Michigan , losing toLysander Woodward , who went on to lose in the general election to the Republican incumbentAlonzo Sessions . He was a newspaper editor inMarquette, Michigan .President
Grover Cleveland appointed Swineford as Governor of theDistrict of Alaska , where he served from 1885 to 1889. In 1906, he was a candidate to be the first Delegate to theUnited States Congress from the District of Alaska, losing in an election onAugust 14 1906 to DemocratFrank Hinman Waskey .Swineford was born in
Ashland, Ohio and died atJuneau, Alaska , where he is buried at Evergreen Cemetery.He was married to Psyche Flower.
