Victor Joseph Reed (
23 December 1905 –8 September 1971 ), was the fourthRoman Catholic Bishop of Oklahoma City-Tulsa.Reed was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Oklahoma on December 21, 1929. He served in many capacities around the diocese, including both
pastor al assignments and positions in the diocesanchancery . In 1957, while serving asrector of Holy Family Cathedral inTulsa, Oklahoma , he was namedauxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Oklahoma City-Tulsa. However, the diocesanordinary , BishopEugene J. McGuinness died unexpectedly before Bishop Reed's episcopal ordination, and Reed was chosen to succeed him.Reed was consecrated to the episcopate as Bishop of Oklahoma City-Tulsa on
5 March 1958 . His principal consecrator was ArchbishopAmleto Giovanni Cicognani ,Apostolic Delegate to the United States, and his principal co-consecrators wereJeremiah Francis Minihan , Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, andStephen Aloysius Leven , Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio.Bishop Reed participated in the sessions of the
Second Vatican Council . After the council concluded, Reed chaired the United States Catholic Conference Committee on Liturgical Experimentation to implement the changes in the liturgy called for by the council.Bishop Reed opposed the
Vietnam War , signing a statement with three other Catholic bishops supporting theNegotiation NOW movement in 1967. Bishop Reed died suddenly of aheart attack in 1971.ee also
