24 May 1922 Reading, Berkshire -11 March 2003 London ) was an Englishplaywright andtelevision writer , best known for creatingITV soap opera "Emmerdale Farm ". Laffan had undergoneheart surgery but two weeks later, he died after suffering a bout ofpneumonia .Kevin penned 262 episodes of "Emmerdale Farm" after coming up with the idea in 1972. Laffan stopped writing for the serial after 12 years but remained on as a
consultant . The Soap was based on a town in Yorkshire, called Ammerdale. Laffan, however, was not allowed to name the programme directly after a real place, so subtly altered the name.Laffan's other big television success was "Beryl's Lot", a comedy-drama inspired by the real-life story of the
novelist Margaret Powell.He wrote "Its a 2 foot 6 inches above the ground world" which was a play that won the Irish Times prize.
"Zoo zoo widershins Zoo" also won a TV award.
