Sparta, Wisconsin . Following his high school graduation, he accepted aNaval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship and enrolled inMarquette University inMilwaukee . In 1969, upon receiving hisbachelor's degree inelectrical engineering , he served as an officer in theU.S. Navy for five years on the nuclear energy staff ofAdmiral Rickover . While on active duty, he attendedGeorge Washington University School of Business and earned a master’s degree in finance. Career
After serving in the United States Navy, James Runde joined Morgan Stanley in 1974 as an associate, specializing in the transportation industry. He led the Transportation Group in Morgan Stanley's Corporate Finance Division for 20 years, and is notable for having won the lead underwriting position for the
United Parcel Service (UPS)initial public offering (IPO) in 1999. When it was issued, this was the largest IPO of its time. While managing the Transportation Group at Morgan Stanley, Runde also served as Conrail'sfinancial advisor , overseeing it's privatization, restructuring, recapitalization and sale. He was also involved in the first airline IPO inChina ,China Eastern .
