Thomas Hillhouse (
March 10 ,1817 Albany County, New York -July 31 ,1897 Yonkers,Westchester County, New York ) was an American farmer, banker and politician.Life
He was the son of Thomas Hillhouse (d. 1835, brother of
James Hillhouse ). He worked and lived on his father's farm until 1851, when he removed toGeneva, New York in Ontario County. He married Harriet Prouty (d. 1903), and their son was Thomas Griswold Hillhouse (d. 1910).He was a Republican member of the
New York State Senate from 1860 to 1861.He was
Adjutant General of theNew York State Militia under GovernorEdwin D. Morgan , from July 1861 until the end of 1862. During theAmerican Civil War the state militia fought with theUnion Army .He was
New York State Comptroller from 1866 to 1867.He was Assistant
Treasurer of the United States until 1881 when he resigned to become President of the Metropolitan Trust Company inNew York City .ources
