- Fulcrad
Fulcrad or Folcrat was the
Duke of Provence (orArles ), probably succeeding Guerin in the mid-9th century. His title of "dux" signified his military command over the other counts of the country of Arles. [AF, 845 (p. 24 n5).]In 845, he revolted against the
Emperor Lothair I from his base ofMarseille , thus destablising the entire region. The emperor came down and forced Fulcrad to surrender, but the two were reconciled by the next year (846). [Ibid.]During his tenure, Marseille came under attack from Greek and
Saracen pirates . TheVikings , who were drawn into alliance withPepin II of Aquitaine at this time, also assaulted Fulcrad in theRhone Valley .ources
