List of Delaware county name etymologies

This is a list of Delaware county name etymologies:

There are three counties in Delaware.

*Kent County, Delaware: Kent was named in 1682 by William Penn for the English county of Kent.
*New Castle County, Delaware: New Castle was named in 1673 by Dutch Governor Anthony Colve for the town of New Castle, Delaware.
*Sussex County, Delaware: Sussex was named in 1682 by William Penn for the English county of Sussex, which was his home county.

The town of New Castle, Delaware was named in 1664 by Colonel Richard Nicolls, in the service of James, Duke of York. There is no record of the origin of the town's name, but it is likely that it was named for William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle, a Privy Counsellor to British King Charles II.
