World Universities Debating Ranking
World Universities Debating Ranking is prepared by the World Debate Website, [ [http://flynn.debating.net/colmmain.htm World Debating Website] ] based on a cumulative ranking methodology. Although not officially recognized by the World Universities Debating Council, currently this is the only method in the debating arena that ranks all the institutions which have participated in the World Universities Debating Championship over the last five years. These rankings have also been used to determine the institutions invited to compete in the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate tournament held in
Kuala Lumpur in 2007. [ [http://www.wupid.hngsc.com World Universities Peace Invitational Debate - Official Site News] ]Methodology
* The ranking is calculated by adding together the points (i.e. 3 points for winning a debate, 2 for a 2nd place, 1 for 3rd, and 0 for 4th) earned by each team representing an institution at the championships over the previous 5 years.
* Where an institution hosted the championships in the last 5 years, and was therefore limited from entering competitive teams that year, their score is calculated over the past 6 years. This special consideration offsets the disadvantage of a hosting university, but does nothing to equalise the difficulties of universities who are disadvantaged by lack of subsidies and punitive costs or distance, which would also assumedly interfere with the ranking system.* Where teams are tied on the same number of points, these ties are broken based on the total known points (i.e. all points that institution has earned since Cork '96).
