- Thomas Charles-Edwards
Thomas Mowbray Charles-Edwards FBA (born 1943) is an academic at
Oxford University . He currently holds the post ofJesus Professor of Celtic and is a ProfessorialFellow at Jesus College. He was educated atAmpleforth College before reading History atCorpus Christi College, Oxford , where he studied for a doctorate after taking the Diploma in Celtic Studies under Sir Idris Foster. He held a Bergin Fellowship at theDublin Institute for Advanced Studies from 1968 to 1969. He then was a Junior Research Fellow and then Fellow in History at Corpus Christi before being appointed to the chair of Celtic.His expertise is in the fields of the
history and language ofWales andIreland , during the so-called 'Dark Ages', which followed the collapse of theRoman Empire in the west.He is a Fellow of the
Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of theBritish Academy .He is a grandson of
Thomas Charles Edwards , first Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is married to Gifford Davina Charles-Edwards, and they have two adult sons.Publications
