Focke-Wulfe Fw 57

The Focke-Wulf Fw 57 was a prototype zerstorer or heavy fighter designed by Dipl-Ing Wlhelm Bansemir of Focke-Wulf as a competitor to the Messerchmitt Me 110.

The Fw 57 was Focke-Wulf's response to the 1934 Reich Air Ministry requirement for a heavy fighter aircraft. It was the first all-metal model produced by the firm. The design was crippled by the non-availability of the desired DB 600 and DB 601 engines, and the lower-powered Jumo 210 engines installed could not provide the predicted performance. This was part of the reason for the design being rejected in favour of the Me 110, after the production of three prototypes.
