Camp Horseshoe for Boys

Camp Horseshoe for Boys

Camp Horseshoe is a traditional summer camp for boys that is located in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and has been in operation since 1933. The camp was started by Maurice Arthur Hirshberg ("Doc H")and his partner Al Engelhardt. The camp is currently owned and operated by Jordan and Fran Shiner.

History

The original Camp Horseshoe was located in Minong, Wisconsin and from 1933 to 1939 was co-directed by Al Engelhardt and Doc H. Doc H began easing Gordy Morrison into the director position, and by 1961 Morrison had acquired sole directorship. The Bear, as he was known, was a tough, charismatic leader. Unfortunately, in 1973, Gordy suffered a major heart attack and died. Bob Mercier took the reins in 1973. In 1985, Scott Morrison, Gordy’s son, took over and led the camp until its Minong location closed in 1990.

In 2004, Camp Horseshoe reopened in Rhinelander under the directorship of Jordan and Fran Shiner. As a former camper and counselor at the original Camp Horseshoe, Jordan brought many of the traditions and spirit of the Horseshoe in Minong to the new Camp Horseshoe. Like the old camp, Rhinelander Horseshoe is situated around a round, peaceful lake, named Snowden and has sand based soil ideal for drainage.

Campers

The campers at Camp Horseshoe are boys ages 8-16 who come from all over the country (including Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Phoenix, Maryland, Sacramento, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Milwaukee).

Accreditation

Camp Horseshoe for Boys is a member of the American Camp Association.
