Teddy-Sumo's Disease

Teddy-Sumo's Disease

Teddy-Sumo's (TS) disease is a rare biphasic metabolic condition first described by Dr. Georgiou Teddy and Dr. Aarne Sumo in 2002. The disease is characterized by recurrent episodes of rapid muscle tissue and lipid store catabolism (usually with accompanying rhabdomyolysis and acute facial lipoatrophy), followed by a correspondingly rapid replenishment of tissues. The latter anabolic phase has been described by Teddy and Sumo as the body entering a state of hypercompensation; accordingly, this phase typically presents physically as skeletal muscle hypertrophy and rapid onset of obesity. Psychologically, a TS sufferer may experience food cravings, psychosis and euphoria during the anabolic phase in particular, as well as nonphasic bouts of clinically significant malaise and depression.
