Elsie Locke

Elsie Locke (born Waiuku, New Zealand, 17 August 1912 - died Christchurch, New Zealand, 8 April 2001) was a New Zealand writer, feminist and social activist. Her birth name was Elsie Violet Farrelly. Along with Rod Donald, Elsie was active in the founding of the Avon Loop Planning Association (ALPA) and in the ongoing development of community the historic Avon Loop residential area in central Christchurch.

Elsie also campaigned for a more balanced understanding of New Zealand history.

Each year the Elsie Locke Award is given by Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa for "the most distinguished contribution to non-fiction for young adults".

Elsie originally studied and graduated from the University of Auckland. This time in her life was portrayed in her book "Student at the gates". Later in her life for her efforts in the community Elsie received an honorary DLitt from the University of Canterbury in 1987.

She had four children, including current Green Party MP Keith Locke, and activist Maire Leadbetter.
