Playing career

Club

He first came to prominence on the club scene as a member of the Sarsfields under-21 team in the early 2000s. In his second year on the panel he won a Cork under-21 hurling championship title in 2003. By this stage Murphy had already joined the Sarsfields senior team. In 2008 he was captain of the team that defeated Bride Rovers in the final of the Cork senior county championship. Not only was it was Murphy's first senior county title but it was Sarsfields first county championship since 1957.

Inter-county

Murphy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork minor hurling team at the turn of the century. He first played in this grade in 2000 and enjoyed some early success. Murphy won a Munster title with the Cork minors following a 2-19 to 1-10 trouncing of Limerick. He later lined out in the All-Ireland final, however, Galway were the victors on that occasion by 2-19 to 4-10. Cork were defeated by Tipperary in the 2001 Munster decider, however, Cork still managed to reach the All-Ireland final via the 'back-door' system. Once again Galwya provided the opposition, however, on this occasion Cork emerged victorious by 2-10 to 1-8 giving Murphy a coveted All-Ireland minor medal. Murphy later joined the Cork under-21 team, however, Cork were defeated in the early stages of the Munster championship during his time on the team.

Murphy has made 26 appearances for the Cork senior hurling team since making his debut in 2003 and has scored a total of 5-17. He is best known as a substitute, however, he started for Cork on a number of occasions. During his senior hurling career Murphy has contributed to Cork's All-Ireland victories in 2004 and 2005, as well as three Munster Championship titles. Prior to this he has won an All-Ireland Minor Hurling medal in 2001, as well as a County Under-21 medal with Sarsfields. Murphy has also won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with Limerick Institute of Technology.
