UFO sightings in New Zealand

This is a list of sightings of unidentified flying objects or UFOs in New Zealand.

1978

* The Kaikoura Lights is a name given by the New Zealand media to a series of sightings that occurred in December, 1978, over the skies of the South Island of New Zealand. These sightings began on December 21 when the crew of a Safe Air Ltd cargo aircraft began observing a series of strange lighted objects around their Armstrong Whitworth AW.660 Argosy aircraft on several flights. The first sighting began when the crew of a cargo plane noticed a series of lights that tracked along with their aircraft for several minutes and then disappeared, only to appear somewhere else. The pilots described some of the objects as being the size of a house and the others as small but with brilliant flashing lights. These objects appeared on the air traffic controller radar in Wellington and also on the radar in the on board rader on the aircraft. The objects were also seen by hundreds of people on the ground.

2008

* On the 2nd of August strange lights were spotted in a paddock situated on the southern side of Glenorchy in Paradise Road (some 5 kilometers from the end of the Road at Mill Flat) and to the northern shores of Diamond Lake and 17 kilometers to the north by part sealed and metal roads from Glenorchy township. Upon closer investigation, a team of people dressed in white jumpsuits with hoods were seen interacting with the unusual looking object which appeared to be a UFO. All traffic was subsequently asked to leave the area and those trying to get a closer look were escorted away by the people dressed in white.

When the sun rose on the morning of the 3rd of August the people dressed in white had vanished and in the center of the paddock was a large comical UFO like object created out of plastic milk crates of various colors.

The farmer and local residents were all questioned, but nobody knew who had created it and why. Some speculated that it was a cover-up and that the real UFO had been removed under the cover of darkness and replaced with the ridiculous looking milk crate creation. Others speculated that it was a stunt by a local group of individuals or that the paddock was being utilized as a film set for a science fiction movie and that farmer was being paid to keep quiet. It is reported that a man holidaying in the area had managed to talk to one of the individuals dressed in white. He supposedly asked what they were doing there and why and the person simply replied "because we can!"
