University of Canterbury Students' Association

Established in 1894, UCSA is funded by students and is governed by a constitution. Since its inception the Association has grown into a diverse organisation with an annual turnover of around $7.0 million, approximately half of which is catering-related, and only approximately 15% of which is derived from student membership levies.

UCSA is the University of Canterbury Students’ Association, and all current students are members. The members govern the organisation through 12 elected representatives.

Most facilities are situated at 90 Ilam Road. The UCSA is separated from the University by a river, which is not just a nice aesthetic, it helps demark the part of campus that students own and run. It is a credit to UCSA’s 100 plus-year history that current students enjoy such fantastic facilities. At 90 Ilam Road UCSA provides services ranging from an Early Learning Centre to a Chaplaincy team through to student bars and cafes; from places to find work (Student Job Search) to places to spend free time by way of the 120 clubs and societies.

The UCSA operates a number of other facilities spread around the campus including cafes in the Law (Alibi), Engineering (Eng Cafe) and James Hight Library (Threesixty) buildings as well as Collective (a cafe and support centre for students based at the Dovedale Ave campus). A second Early Learning Centre is situated on the corner of Montana & Ilam Roads.

Students can receive academic advice and support through the Education Team, and social comment and entertainment by way of UCSA’s media:Canta magazine. There are huge gigs like Orientation, End of Lectures Tea Party and the Lowland Games, and child care at UCSA’s Early Childcare Centres. This diversity reflects the many services that students have initiated to ensure that the university experience for students at Canterbury is all that it can be.
