Shampoo Ni Lola

Shampoo Ni Lola

Shampoo Ni Lola is a 90s indie band from the Philippines.

All of the members met and became friends during their high school years at "Pasig Catholic College". By early 1992, "Andy Intalan", "Gilbert Robiso", "Jeff Santos", "Toz Cruz" and "Wowie Mendoza" started weekend jamming sessions at Jeff's house.

In succeeding sessions, Wowie would bring along another high school buddy, "Jhun Mora", while another schoolmate, Marlon, would be visiting these sessions accompanied by his girlfriend, "Liz Relleve". Here Jhun and Liz would act as back-up vocalists. The bands first public performances were at friend's parties and town concerts covering songs by bands like Nirvana, Black Sabbath and Juan dela Cruz .

With Toz busy on his collegiate and personal responsibilities, and the band becoming active with local gigs and "battle-of-the-bands", Andy, with the members approval, invited Jhun to be their new lead singer, while Liz being as co-lead and back-up vocals. This was also the time that the band started performing their own compositions that included the melodically-playful "Nail", the somber "The Day My Cat Died", the emotionally-charged duet "Between Edges" and the angst-ridden "Tablado Ka" (You're Betrayed) - which would become their very first radio hit. These four songs would be part of their lo-fi EP, "Shampoo Your Face!"", which they also distributed to radio networks and music companies as demos.

As luck would have it, one of their demos were heard by Ed Formoso, an icon in the Philippine Rock Scene, who like what he'd heard and invited the band to be part of his project, "A Dozen Alternatives". Impressed with the band's ability to record a song - "Tablado Ka" - in record time, Ed as Shampoo ni Lola to be part of two more compilation albums, "Christmas on the Rocks" and "Mga Himig Natin - Pinoy Rock Revisited 2", where the band recorded "Namamasko" (Caroling) and "Saranggola ni Pepe" (Pepe's Kite), respectively.

After recording "Namamasko", Liz decided to pursue and concentrate on her studies. This change coupled with the radio hits, "Shampoo ni Lola" performed several gigs, including performances on two legendary clubs, Clubb Dredd and Mayric's.

Slowly inched its way almost to the mainstream with performances in shows like "That's Entertainment", "Sama-Sama Together" and "RJTV". They also had an infamous second appearance at "Chibugan Na" where their a frenetic and un-sync performance on their recorded single won applause from the alternative rock scene.

They also guested and performed on radio (LA105 and NU107), including a noteworthy live cover of the pop-jukebox classic, "Di Ako Iiyak" (I Will Not Cry) at LA105 with nothing but an old and un-tuned 6-string guitar with a missing string(!). This impressed one of the stations main disc jockey, The Doctor, who would be key to the band's full-length collection.

At the end of 1995, the band recorded for two more compilation records for different indie labels. The songs were "TV Miracle" (which was re-recorded for their self-titled album) and "I Must Have "A Girlfriend (On Christmas Eve)". Due to unknown reasons, these records were not released.

While they may not have released any single in the latter part of 1995, they received a phone call from the Doctor, a DJ at LA105, who told them to meet with a new indie-company, JML Records, for a possible full-length album - "Shampoo ni Lola"". Within a month an album was recorded and was distributed by the following month.

After promotions for the album (1996-1997), the band prepared new compositions in the hope of recording a second album. Due to internal problem with the label, it did not materialize. Still the band continued to actively perform festival circuit till early 1999. Between late 1999-2005, band members concentrated more on careers outside music and starting their own families, but still performing on music festivals every now and them.

Late-2005, Shampoo ni Lola seemed to have a second wind and have been reactivated their weekend sessions and starting on new compositions. This time, however, the band has a new lead guitarist, Alex Ramirez, subbed for Gilbert, who, by now, is mostly on business trips outside Metro Manila.

This new incarnation has already performed at "Purple Haze" and "Column Bar". In addition, this revitalized "Shampoo ni Lola" have already recorded six songs as part of their long-awaited new album which they are producing on their own label and will be released by mid-2007.
