Ignacio Piñeiro (1888–1969) was a Cuban musician, member of
Septeto Nacional .Biography
Piñeiro was born in
Havana . In 1926, he was a member of the bandSexteto Occidente withMaría Teresa Vera , and they went together toNew York .On returning to Cuba, he founded the band
Sexteto Nacional ("National Sestet"). This name was chosen because this group was a national band, in contrast toSexteto Habanero , just in Havana. Later, adding a trumpet to the traditional sexteto format, this band becameSepteto Nacional ("National Septet").Piñeiro played the
double bass and wrote the main songs of the band. For financial reasons, he quit the group in 1935 and was replaced by the trumpet playerLazaro Herrera until the group disbanded in 1937.The band was recreated several times from 1954 onwards under Piñeiro's direction.
He died in his native Havana.
