Food Basics USA

Food Basics is a no-frills supermarket chain originally created by A&P Canada.

Food Basics carries all the major national brands as well as two of its own private label brands: "Equality" (for average everyday products), and "Basics For Less", their line of large economy-sized products. The A&P store-wide brands of America's Choice, Master Choice, and Health Pride are also present.

In 2001, A&P brought the Food Basics concept to the United States, changing their Passaic, New Jersey store from an A&P to a Food Basics. A&P was pleased with the results, and announced later that year that one of their flagship stores, the Paterson, New Jersey store, would close that November and begin the process of switching over to a Food Basics.

Shortly after that, A&P decided to concentrate most of its business in its larger stores, and began to convert most of its smaller stores to Food Basics stores.

Today, A&P operates 9 Food Basics stores in the United States (6 in New Jersey, one in Brooklyn, and the other two in Philadelphia). They operated several Food Basics stores in Michigan and Ohio through their Farmer Jack chain, but both problems with the Farmer Jack chain and the fact the stores were not successful caused them to close those stores in 2005.

In 2006, A&P revived Food Basics, opening a new prototype in Glassboro, New Jersey. The new format emphasizes every day low pricing or best pricing, fresh produce, cut meats, and bakery. New signage, colors and wide aisles are many of the improvements made in this new prototype. The Glassboro store was closed in early 2008 (along with a store in Dumont, New Jersey).
