Family
Joseph Alvin Gladstone was born in
1959 to Colonel and Mindy Gladstone. Due to his father's military career, he moved around a lot when he was a kid. He reveals in an episode that his father was a very strict and serious person and that he never had a very good relationship with him, mainly due to his career choice and personal goals. They eventually reconciled in the fourth season. He also has an uncle named Jasper.Joey is the best friend of Danny Tanner, who recruits him, along with Jesse Katsopolis, to raise his three young daughters. It is revealed that Joey and Danny first became best friends on February 23, 1968, when Danny was 10 and Joey was 8. On that day, a bully named Sheldon was harassing Danny, so Joey made jokes about the student's large butt in Danny's defense. When Sheldon told the teacher that Joey made jokes about him, Danny denied that Joey harassed the other student, preventing Joey from getting in trouble. Since both Joey and Danny saved each other, they became "soul brothers" and "best friends for life". This friendship is what convinces Danny to invite Joey to live with him and help him raise his daughters.
Career
Joey makes his living as an aspiring comedian, and he has occasional performances during his many tours of various locations nationwide. His most notable appearances were on "
Star Search " (where he was beat bySteve Oedekerk ), and as the opening act in Las Vegas forWayne Newton . He is also well-known for his impressions of cartoon charactersPopeye , Bullwinkle,Bugs Bunny , Astro/Scooby-Doo ,Daffy Duck ,Yosemite Sam , Tasmanian Devil,Ren Höek ,Kermit the Frog , and many other cartoon characters. He can also do impressons of various celebrities, such asArnold Schwarzenegger ,Bob Hope ,Joe Pesci ,Marlon Brando ,Bill Cosby , and many others.Along with being a comedian, on the second season, Joey and Jesse entered the advertising agency together as advertising executives, before starting their own agency, called JJ Creative Services, for a brief time. On the fifth season, Joey goes on to host a children's television show, "The Ranger Joe Show". After being fired, due to budget cuts at the station, he and Jesse start hosting the radio show "The Rush Hour Renegades".
Relationships
In the episode "13 Candles", it is revealed that Joey's first kiss was with Colleen Fenegan, in 7th grade. Danny also had his first kiss with a woman of the same name in 8th grade.
Joey has several relationships throughout the series, but none of them turn out to be very serious. In the second season, he started dating Cheryl. She appeared in two episodes as his girlfriend.
In the seventh season, he brought his girlfriend Roxie, a fellow stand-up comedian, to meet the family. On another episode, she made fun of the Tanners during her routine.
Personality and hobbies
Joey also has a big interest in cartoons, toys, and other things traditionally marketed to children. He can sometimes be seen wearing pajamas and slippers with a character from some children's show on them.
He is also an avid
Michigan hockey fan, as aDetroit Red Wings jersey or t-shirt is commonly seen during the series, as well as at least one appearance of aUniversity of Michigan hockey jersey (episode "Granny Tanny").A further look, however, shows Joey to be multi-talented. He has a pilot's license, and can fly a two-seater, out of which Jesse skydives on the day of his wedding. Also, on "Wake Up, San Francisco" he answers a question about cartoon violence with professorial mastery. It is also later revealed that he has a teaching license, and he even substitutes for Michelle's class in one episode.
Along with his comical side, Joey can also give good advice at times. In addition, there are some times he tries too hard in serious situations, such as when he once became so fierce in preparing for a hockey game that he scared Michelle. Also, on several occasions, he overdid the comedy part of his work with Jesse at the advertising agency. It is the warm, sensitive, occasionally naïve Joey that the family loves. Joey also expresses how grateful he is to live with the Tanners because he grew up as an only child, and wished to be part of "
The Brady Bunch ". The Tanner family, for the most part, enjoys Joey's child-like behavior, including Jesse, the tough guy who at times cannot stand Joey's comedy, but thinks of Joey as his brother. Their relationship is best described as the rocker/rebel older brother and the comedic/immature little brother, even though Joey is actually six years older than Jesse. He, and everyone else, considers him to be an uncle to DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle.Plot Holes

Viva Las Joey ", Joey is talking to his father, and his father states he had thechicken pox when Joey was 3 years old. However, in the episode "A Pox in Our House ", Joey states that he never had them because he was immune, then, later in the episode, catches them.Dave Coulier on his character

Detroit Red Wings fan himself.
