Peter Tompkins (Born in Athens,_Georgia, United_States on April 19, 1919 – January 23, 2007) was an American journalist, World War II Office of Strategic Services's (O.S.S.) spy in Rome and best-selling author.

He was war correspondent for the "New York Herald Tribune" and CBS during WWII. During that time he was recruited by the O.S.S. in 1943 and utilized as an undercover agent in Italy. In 1962 he published his diary of an O.S.S. agent written in enemy-held territory - Rome during 1944 called "A spy in Rome", published by Simon and Schuster, New York.

His best known and most influential books include "The Secret Life of Plants" published in 1973, "Secrets of the Great Pyramid", reprinted in paperback in 1997, and "Mysteries of the Mexican Pyramids" published in 1976. He is the father of author Ptolemy Tompkins.
