Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt (in English: Rise and Fall of the Roman World), abbreviated ANRW, is an extensive series of scholarly books dealing with the history and culture of
Ancient Rome . Like a journal, each book in the series is made up of essays contributed by individual authors. Essays are in various European languages, but primarily in German and English.Table of contents

History of the work
The series began in 1972 as a
Festschrift to commemorate the 75th birthday ofJoseph Vogt , a German classical historian. However, the work grew increasingly larger over time and is now roughly the same size as anencyclopedia . The series is edited by Hildegard Temporini (parts I & II) and Wolfgang Haase (part of II), and is published by the German pressWalter de Gruyter .Contents
ANRW is also an international joint work of the historical sciences. The task consists of treating all important aspects of the antique Roman world as well as their continuation and
reception in theMiddle Ages and modern times, according to the most up-to-date research in individual areas. The history of "reception" (i.e. the influence that an older work has upon later works) from later Rome until the present day is an important part of the work. Other fields covered by the series include political history, culture history, law, religion, language and literature, philosophy, sciences, technology and art.Structure
[Work on] The individual (part) volumes have a manual character. The articles in the volumes become meanwhile from over 1000 specialized knowledge-shank-learn (particularly from the ranges old persons, medieval ones and newer history; Byzantinistik, Slavistik; Classical one, central latin, Roman and eastern philology; Classical, eastern and Christian archaeology and history of art; Jurisprudence; Religion science and theology, particularly church history and Patristik.) contributed. Languages are German, English, French and Italian.
The row I (1973/73) concerns itself in 4 volumes with the Roman Republic of, row II (appears since 1974) with the Roman Kaiser era, row III with late ancient times (in planning) and row IV is to finally decide with register volumes the work.
