Paruthiyur

Parithiyur is a calm and tiny village on the northern banks of Kudamuruti River, near Sengalipuram, in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. It was originally called Kodandarama Puram. Busses from Kumbakonam, Nannilam, Kidavasal pass through Paruthiyur Village.

Local legend

Due to the poisonous flames of Raghu, Surya, the Sun God had once lost His facial beauty. It occurred on a solar eclipse day. The Sun God prayed to Lord Siva from this place and regained His charm and brightness. 'Sun' in Tamil is called Parithi. As Parithi Worshipped here, this place came to be called Paruthiyur. In colloquial usage it has become Paruthiyur.

Brahmashree Parithiyur Krishna Sasthrigal, a renowned Ramayana Discourse scholar had spent all his earnings for the renovation of all temples in Paruthiyur. Recently with the blessings of Sri Sankarachariyas of Kanchi Kamakodi Mutt and Maharanyam [http://www.namadwaar.org Sri Muralidhara Swamiji] ,renovations are done to all the temples by Paruthiyur kainkarya Trust [http://www.geocities.com/paruthiyurkainkaryatrust/] .

Vedacharya Sri Paruthiyur R.Srinivasa Sastrigal, Famous Carnatic Musician Neyveli Santhanagopalan, belongs to Paruthiyur and was brought up in Neyveli. He has titles like Yuva Kala Bharathi and Isai Peroli to his credit. Vedanta scholar Paruthiyur Vaidhyanatha Deekshidar, Paruthiyur Somasundara Sastrigal, Paruthiyur Swaminatha Iyer editor Amudhasurabi the oldest Indian magazine, Tamil scholar and English Professor Selvamani Iyengar, Writer and pravachan pundit santhanaraman, Poet Paruthiyur Balu Annai Dhasan, Actor & Vikata Kavi R. V. Ramani are famous from Paruthiyur.
