Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, founder and president of
Touro College , is a social scientist and educator, a preeminent leader in the Jewish community and a pioneer in Jewish and general higher education. Dr. Lander was one of three associate directors of the Mayor's Committee on Unity, established in1944 by formerNew York City MayorFiorello La Guardia , which became the city's firstCommission on Human Rights . The Commission prepared the firstcivil rights legislation for New York state. An ordained Orthodox rabbi, he holds a doctorate in sociology fromColumbia University .Before establishing Touro College in 1971, he served as a professor of sociology for over two decades at
City University of New York and atYeshiva University , where he established the university's graduate schools of education, psychology and social work and served as dean of itsBernard Revel Graduate School .
